Sociologists are quite familiar with the combination of marginalized identities that can lead to oppression, inequalities, and “double disadvantages.” But can negative stereotypes actually have positive consequences?

Financial Juneteenth recently highlighted a study showing that lgbtq+ black men may contain better odds of landing a job and higher salaries than their linear black male colleagues. Led by sociologist David Pedulla, the data come from resumes and a career description evaluated by 231 white individuals selected in a national probability sample. The experiment asked them to suggest starting salaries for the position and answer questions about the fictional prospective employee. To suggest race and sexual orientation, resumes included typically raced names (either “Brad Miller” and “Darnell Jackson”) and listed participation in “Gay Student Advisory Council” half the time.

Pedulla initiate that straight black men were more likely to be perceived as threatening as measured with answers as to whether the respondent thought the applicant was likely to “break workplace rules,” make “female co-workers feel uncomfort

Gay for pay

The female prostitutes stood outside of the "VIP" door of Chester's nightclub in Accra with their arms folded. The aqua blue light coming from inside revealed the agitated look on their faces.

David, an immigrant from Liberia, knew VIP was code for "gay only" and sauntered into the club, much to the chagrin of the high-heeled women outside.

Within minutes, David made eye contact with most of the men in the club and decided who his next customer would be.

Ghanaians are known for their enterprising spirit and using their resources to sustain themselves financially. For some men that means selling the only resource they have—their bodies.

At clubs like Chester's and places like Labadi Beach, male prostitutes discreetly offer their services to willing gay customers. They perform various sexual services for a price though they may not be gay themselves.

Most charge about 200,000 cedi or roughly 20 bucks for oral sex and more for anal or unprotected sex.

In 2018, Tunde* was sent to a state in the Nigerian middle belt for his NYSC, the one-year paramilitary program Nigerian graduates are expected to serve out after finishing university. He quickly realised that one place within the express he could be posted to and make excellent money during his service year was the Express Government’s House.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t the only one who came to this decision — the line of NYSC corps members who wanted that posting  was long and many weren’t afraid to bribe the officers in charge of drafting people in command to guarantee their identify. Tunde, who didn’t hold the money to spend his way out, got a rare opportunity when he realised the camp commandant was making passes at him.

‘‘I slept with the camp commandant to influence my posting to the state government house.’’ Tunde, who identifies as a straight man, told Zikoko. ‘‘We had sex once at his quarters and twice in a hotel outside the camp. I felt bad about it because of my religious beliefs, but I wasn’t about to be posted to a local school in one o black gay for pay
