About the Movie
The Christmas Setup follows the story of New York lawyer Hugo (Ben Lewis) who heads to Milwaukee with his best friend Madelyn (Ellen Wong) to invest the holidays with his brother Aiden (Chad Connell) and his mom Kate (Fran Drescher), who is also in charge of the local Christmas celebrations. Ever the matchmaker, Kate arranges for Hugo to run into Patrick (Blake Lee), Hugo’s high institution friend and secret crush, who has recently returned after a successful stint in Silicon Valley. As they enjoy the local holiday festivities together, Hugo and Patrick’s attraction to each other is undeniable and it looks as though Kate’s Santa-style matchmaking is a success. But as Hugo receives synonyms of a big promotion requiring a move to London, he must settle what is most significant to him.

Have you ever gotten a rogue onion ring in your order of fries? If you like onion rings, it’s cause for celebration. But if you absentmindedly bite into it and think it’s going to be a strip of potato, the slimy sweetness might make you gag.
That’s how I felt when, midway through Lifetime’s wholesome new Christmas movie, I encountered a joke about strap-ons.
According to Lifetime, Under the Christmas Tree is its “first lesbian holiday romance,” directed by, I kid you not, a woman named Lisa Rose Snow. (The channel aired its first-ever LGBTQ Christmas movie, The Christmas Setup, lastyear, amid a slew of putatively groundbreaking homosexual holiday films.) In the true spirit of Christmas rom-coms, Under the Christmas Tree is chaste: Hearts are warmed, but nothing ever gets truly steamy between Alma (Elise Bauman, nearly upstaged by her bangs) and Charlie (Tattiawna Jones), who meet adorable in Camden, Maine, just before Christmas.

Lifetime Reveals Casts for First LGBTQ, Asian-Centered Christmas Movies
One month after announcing two holiday films centered on a gay romance and an Asian American family, Lifetime is unveiling casts for both.
The Christmas Set Up, the network's first Christmas movie with a pivotal LGBTQ storyline, will celestial body real-life married couple Ben Lewis (Arrow) and Blake Lee (Fam). (See photo above.) Joining them in the feel-good holiday production will be Fran Drescher and Ellen Wong.
The film was written and directed by members of the LGBTQ community. Lifetime says it is operational with GLAAD to confirm that the portrayals within the movie accurately illustrate the LGBTQ community.
Additionally, Lifetime has cast Jacky Lai (V-Wars) and Tony Giroux (Motherland: Fort Salem) as the leads for its first Asian American-centric holiday movie, A Sugar & Spice Holiday. Legendary actor Tzi Ma, who is coming off the release ofMulan, has also boarded the film.
