Meet the Gay Latino Men Who Are Normalizing Genderless Makeup

The first time that Puertoriqueño David Lopez was clocked wearing makeup, he was on the subway with a guy he was dating. “Are you wearing makeup?” he asked Lopez—who had, in evidence, applied concealer under his eyes. Lopez’s only response was to deny, disallow, deny. “I was favor, ‘What?’ I was so embarrassed, and I was like, ‘No, I would never, never put on makeup,’” he says.

Lopez, a celebrity hairstylist and beauty content creator, has been unlearning and battling stereotypes about men and makeup ever since. To that end, he’s openly donning bolder, brighter makeup, a beard, and some of the most colorful (and beautifully styled) wigs you’ll see on the internet. And he isn’t the only gay Latino helping make beauty and makeup accessible to everyone, regardless of gender.

Andry Hernandez Romero, a lgbtq+ makeup artist who came to the United States last year in seek of asylum, is one of 238 Venezuelan migrants who were flown from the U.S. to a maximum security prison in El Salvador three weeks ago. 

President Trump, who campaigned on eradicating the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua, brokered a deal with El Salvador's president that allows the U.S. to send deportees to the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT. 

The Trump administration used the Alien Enemies Act, a law not invoked since World War II, to send many of the Venezuelans there, claiming they were all terrorists and violent gang members. 

Lawyers and family members of the Venezuelan migrants told 60 Minutes they've had no contact with the men since they arrived in El Salvador.

"Our client, who was in the middle of searching asylum, just disappeared. One day he was there, and the next time we're supposed to acquire court, and he wasn't brought to court," Lindsay Toczylowski, Hernandez Romero's lawyer, said.
