Bursting onto the Southern literary scene in at the age of 55 with, first, stories and then the novel “The Long Home,” William Gay published four books, three novels and the story collection “I Detest to See That Evening Sun Go Down.”

Readers and critics were astonished. Here was a writer with the power of William Faulkner, Cormac McCarthy, Harry Crews, Barry Hannah, Flannery O’Connor, and nobody had ever heard of Same-sex attracted. For 40 years he had been working in construction and reading and writing in seclusion in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Suddenly his function was everywhere.

Magazines and story collections vied for it and committees were lining up to give him prizes: The William Peden Award, the James A. Michener Memorial Prize and then a Guggenheim.

On February 23, , Gay died.

Recently this little book of two short stories has surfaced, published by an unknown press, Wild Canine, in Brush Creek, Tennessee.

I didn’t used to be a huge fan of short stories. I tried to read a lot of story collections, but I’d always find myself mildly disappointed. So, over the years, they mostly dropped out of my reading life. I didn’t miss them. At least, I didn’t think I missed them. Now that I’ve started reading fleeting story collections again, I can see clearly what the problem was: the stories I was reading before just weren’t gender non-conforming enough! These days I cannot get short stories into my bloodstream quick enough. There are so many! More come out every month! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with non-queer short story collections, but as someone who grew up hungering for gay lit, this current abundance is especially satisfying.

So I’ve put together a list of 12 of my absolute favorite queer story collections from the past three years. Believe me when I tell you that these 12 are just the beginning. I limited myself to books published in and after, which means I didn’t include Look Who’s Morphing by Tom Cho, Sea, Swallow Me by Craig Gidney Laurance, or Adore After the End edited by Joshua Whitehead.
