Eric Stonestreet believes 'Modern Family' helped make America less homophobic
On the heels of ABC's "Modern Family" season 10 finale, one of the show's leading stars, Eric Stonestreet, attributed the country's more accepting outlook on homosexual relationships to the sitcom's portrayal of it's characters.
When "The View"'s longtime co-host Joy Behar asked if his role helped make the territory less homophobic, he replied "I believe that."
"I can only base it on my personal interactions with people," Stonestreet premised. "One of my favorite tweets ever was a screenshot of a conversation a girl had with her dad that said, 'You cured my dad of his homophobia.' Like, Mitch and Cam cured [her] dad of his homophobia."
"That doesn't mean we obtain credit for a lot," he added. "People came before us on TV as a gay couple. There will be couples after us. But there's just no doubt that we have had a good cultural [influence], and we're very proud of that."

Eric Stonestreet may not own known anyone who was openly gay during his adolescent years in Kansas, but his Emmy-winning "Modern Family" turn quickly changed all of that.
The 43-year-old actor, who is straight, told HuffPost Dwell in an interview this week that he feels "more on the front lines of what it means to stand up for people's equality" after playing Cameron Tucker on "Modern Family," which was just renewed for a seventh season.
"I'm just more active in that community and I experience a little bit more responsible for people's words and actions," he said.
Stonestreet also opened up about some early concerns he had over tackling the role, and said that he felt particularly protective of his co-star, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who is openly gay, noting, "I was worried from the beginning that I was going to be part of a male lover bashing of sorts."
Last year, he joked that his character was a "bossy, fussy bottom," adding that many gay fans had approached him in hopes of "challenging" his sexuality.

Eric Stonestreet won two Emmy Awards for playing Cameron Tucker, a flamboyant same-sex attracted man in Modern Family. To say it’s a convincing portrayal is truly a testament to Eric’s acting skills — considering he identifies as straight.
“I kind of always felt like I had to dig myself out of a bit of a hole and let girls know that I’m actually straight,” Eric joked in 2009.
Even though Eric says he’s “openly straight,” he has no problem playing a gay man on television. On-screen fiance Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who is gay, doesn’t view it as an issue, either.
“He is so game for this character. We just clicked. We hang out a lot,” Jesse told Out Magazine in 2009, the year Modern Family debuted. “Really, the rapport is what dictated how the relationship was. I’m certainly falling in adore with Eric Stonestreet more and more each day!”
The pair also has a running joke about Eric being “gay for pay.”
“He’s straight in real being, and they pay him X amount of dollars to be gay,” Jesse said on Inside the Actors Studio in 2011. “And wouldn’t anybody?”
