James Garner as Maverick.
When I was a kid my big brother loved the TV Western Maverick. It’s been running on a cable channel and I’ve enjoyed catching up with it. The series introduced the American audience to James Garner as Bret Maverick (who often distributed adventures with his brother Bart, played by Jack Kelly).
Garner became an instant star, and it’s not hard to see why. He was masculine without being obnoxious; handsome but not too pretty; charming but not cloying. Most of all he was a natural, relaxed thespian (though he put in a lot of unyielding work to get that way!)
Which all led to a storied career. He created not one, but two, iconic television characters—Maverick and Jim Rockford. He transitioned easily to movies, and was at place in light comedy (The Thrill of it All; Victor/Victoria), action adventure (The Great Escape; Hour of the Gun), romance (Murphy’s Romance), and showed considerable dramatic chops in the experimental Mister Buddwing.
By all accounts, he was as decent a fellow as there was in Hollywood. Married to the identical woman for 57 years. Not a party animal or public boor. A true pr

James Garner is an American film and television actor whose career has spanned more than five decades. He has starred in more than fifty movies and in several television series such as Maverick and The Rockford Files He was one of the first Hollywood actors to stand out in both media.
In 1981 I was booked on a session in Studio 2 to record a couple of titles with Gigi Garner.
Being a huge fan of her father, I thought I might get the opportunity to ask her a scant questions about him.
After a couple of days, I was thrilled when her father arrived to view how the session was going. He looked every bit the movie celestial body with a voice that reverberated around the room.
He was in the UK filming Victor Victoria, a new movie he was starring in with Julie Andrews. Henry Mancini, who had written the melody for the film, was coincidently next-door in studio one recording the score for the movie, with John Richards, the studios top film recording engineer.
Garner was charming and warm to everyone. Listening to the payback of his daughter’s recording, he s

Early Life
Born James Scott Bumgarner on April 7, 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, James Garner's first childhood in the Excellent Depression-era Dust Bowl was marked by hardships. He is the youngest of three sons. When he was only four years old, he lost his mother, Mildred Bumgarner, who was half-Cherokee. His father, Weldon Warren "Bill" Bumgarner, eventually abandoned James and his brothers Charles and Jack, leaving them in the care of relatives. The Bumgarner boys reunited with their father after Bill remarried a rare years later. But their home life was far from happy, as their new stepmother was physically and verbally abusive to her stepsons. She and Weldon Bumgarner eventually divorced.

The late James Garner was born 95 years ago today.
I cannot tell you how many episodes of The Rockford Files I’ve watched with my dad since it is one of his all-time favorite shows. My dad just thought Garner was excellent as private investigator Jim Rockford from 1974-80 and in six TV movies in the mid-90s. He had been a fan since he played the gun-slinging Bret Maverick on TV’s Maverick from 1957-1960 and again in 1981-82.
My favorite Garner performances, however, came in the movies.
Who can forget him contrary Steve McQueen in The Great Escape and I loved him with Doris Day in Move Over Darling. An then there was the only film performance he ever earned an Oscar nomination for: the 1985’s Murphy’s Romance opposite Sally Field – I think it’s my most favorite of all.
While he didn’t win the Oscar, he did defeat a pair of Emmys, three Golden Globes, two Peoples Choice Awards and the 2005 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
