Marissa Bode believes Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero, Nessarose, Boq the Wizard and Madame Morrible are all queer.
Happy Pride month!Wicked's Marissa Bode has spoken and she says all the film's characters are "canonically" queer.
Ever since the original Wicked book came out in 1995, there have been longstanding theories that Elphaba and Glinda are romantically in cherish with each other. Wicked author Gregory Maguire has since confirmed that the lesbian subtext was "intentional" and Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have said that they both believe Elphaba and Glinda are queer.
Now, Marissa Bode, who plays Nessarose, has entered the chat and argued that every character in the musical is gay.
Speaking with Into, Marissa, who is queer in valid life, said: “The straights are gonna get mad at me for saying this...but canonically, for me, everybody in the cast, character-wise, is queer in my brain. Like, Elphaba and Galinda were a little too suspicious for me personally. In my brain, t
I saw Wickedthis weekend, and I can’t stop talking about it. I saw the musical on Broadway for the first time when I was 16-years-old, and I am now 32-years-old, DOUBLE the age I was then. I’ve loved Wicked for all of my adult life and then some. If you’re wondering if I cried, I did, obviously, but the tears were because we have to wait a whole year to hear Cynthia Erivo’s version of “No Nice Deed” and Erivo + Ariana Grande’s version of “For Good.” Two-part films should be banned, especially when it comes to movie musicals!!!!
One thing that connects all of the current editors of Autostraddle is that we all have a deep cherish for and background in musical theater. I went to a performing arts high school where I studied musical theater, Riese went to THEE carrying out arts boarding school, and Drew was also a theater dork. We all have unhealthy relationships to the television program Glee. All of this is to say we’re very aware of the longstanding tradition of musical theater being dominated by the gays. In high college, the stage was the one space where homosexuals were at the highest of the food chain. And yet, we w
Amid the excitement fans are feeling over tonight’s impending trailer drop for Wicked: For Good, one of the series’ stars chimed in with, debatably, an even more pressing announcement: every main character in Wicked is queer.
So said Marissa Bode, who plays Nessarose. In a recent interview for INTO’s control 25 Under 25 series, Bode shared her view on the queer makeup of Wicked’s cast of characters.
Now, in a modern TikTok, she expanded on her headcanons, getting more specific about what culture she thinks each personality holds.

“In response to the article that came out yesterday, where I said I think, in my opinion, that the main characters are all lgbtq+ in some way — me, in my intellect, canonically — these are my thoughts,” Bode began.
“Galinda is a lesbian. Elphaba is bisexual. Nessarose is bisexual. Fiyero is multi-attracted . Boq is questioning, but queer in some way. Doctor Dillamond: gay,” she said.
Even the musical’s villains are part of the queer community, Bode continued: Madame Morrible is a
Wicked isn’t just for the gays: it’s by the gays, too, and its latest queer development behind the scenes proves it.
On screen, Marissa Bode plays Elphaba’s sister Nessarose — a divisive character for fans, to say the least — but off screen, there’s nothing but love for her and her partner Lauren Brooks. Fans recently discovered their relationship and have been showering them with love.
“wait I had already fallen in love with her & she’s queer?!!!! ” wrote one commenter.
