We compared the biggest U.S. cities based on 20 indicators of an ideal LGBTQ municipality, such as anti-discrimination policies, the share of queer households, and LGBTQ back resources.
We also factored in affordability, LGBTQ-friendly health protect access, and Pride-readiness.

The Gist
The top of our ranking is dominated by liberal strongholds favor San Francisco (No. 1), Washington (No. 2), and Denver (No. 4). These cities tend to be the most progressive — at least at the municipal level — so feel free to speak “gay” here. Although generally not the most affordable, our top performers display strong LGBTQ+ communities.

The LGBTQ+ society in the United States constitutes a diverse and increasingly significant population segment, as various surveys and reports indicate. According to a Pew Research Center survey, approximately 7% of U.S. adults identify as woman loving woman, gay, or bisexual. Moreover, data from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, drawing from the U.S. Census Bureau&#x;s Household Pulse Survey, estimates that the Gay population in the U.S. comprises at least 20 million adults, equating to nearly 8% of the total adult population.
Gallup&#x;s findings further reinforce this trend, reporting a % increase in U.S. adults identifying as LGBT. Notably, the numbers underscores a substantial inclusion among the younger generation, with approximately 21% of Generation Z adult

Obergefell v. Hodges is a civil rights case in which the Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to join is guaranteed to gay couples. Decided on June 26, , Obergefell v. While all 50 states are required to recognize lgbtq+ marriages, some states and cities are more LGBTQ friendly and have higher populations of gay couples. Portland, Oregon, for example, is one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the US. Portland was the first major urban area to elect an openly gay man as mayor in and mandated most public restrooms to be gender-neutral in Salt Lake City, Utah has two gay city councilors, a lesbian mayor and a pride festival of more than 40, participants every year.
