Gay barber shop nyc
What makes a good gay hair salon? In Brooklyn, a battle over what’s inclusive.
At most traditional barbershops or salons, assumptions are often made based on how your gender is perceived, said Lex Levi, a barber at Mutiny, a collective focused on gender-affirming cuts.
“A queer or trans barber thinks about gender in different ways,” they said. “If someone says they want a masculine haircut, or a feminine haircut, their next question is, what does that mean to you?”
For some clients, like Max Adler, 35, the appeal goes beyond identity – queer salons can extend a feeling of safety.
As a competitive boxer, Adler was all too-familiar with straight, cisgender barbershops. For years, he hid his identity for fear that he would not be accepted in a typically male space. Often, he said he was almost “found out” when barbers encouraged him to shadow the shop’s Instagram or asked him personal questions.
“I kept hopping from barbershop to barbershop,” he said. “I was keeping a secret.”
At Hairrari, Adler said he doesn’t have to hide.
He was there on a May afternoon to get his fade touched up. He also wanted a spiky lightning bolt carved into the side.

Who is Martial Vivot?
Vivot’s career began at age 15 with a rigorous 4 year apprenticeship in France where he was awarded the title of best apprentice by the French hair academy. He moved to London at age 23 to train at the Toni & Guy Academy, and then returned to France to earn his Master’s Degree. Foreseeing the dramatic evolution in men’s grooming that was on the horizon, in the 90’s Vivot became a pioneer in Europe of what would eventually become established as the “metrosexual” approach to men‘s grooming.
In 1999 Vivot moved to Novel York and very shortly became the stylist of choice for many of Manhattan’s most influential men, and the go-to rule on men’s grooming for magazines like GQ, Vogue Hommes, New York, Cargo, Gotham, and Departures. He also appeared on television shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Good Morning America, and received two New York Magazine Best Of Beauty nods for his straight-razor shave.

7 queer-friendly barbershops in Brooklyn to get your glow up
By Nick Gallagher
More than 90 percent of LGBTQ folks have been misgendered during a hair appointment and nearly 60 percent have felt judgment while getting a haircut, according to the Dress Code Project, an organization that provides resources and teaching to around 400 inclusive barber shops across the globe.
As a result, there is a growing number of queer-inclusive barber shops that have emerged in Brooklyn over the past several years that explicitly cater to the Homosexual community. They set themselves apart by adopting gender-neutral pricing models and openly advocating against harassment and discrimination in the industry.
Here is a (probably completely non-comprehensive) list of barbershops in the community to check out today:
