The Best Queer Holiday Movies to Make the Yuletide Gay

Not too long ago, LGBTQ+ people who wanted to observe themselves represented in holiday movies could either (a) pretend or (b) agree for a second-rate motion picture with a queer nature who had very several lines, ambition, or development.
Early in the contemporary homosexual holiday canon, 2005’s The Family Stone, which stars gay icon Sarah Jessica Parker as a (shocker) snobby New Yorker spending the holidays at her boyfriend’s family home, became a queer hit for its B-plot gay couple with ambitions to adopt a baby. And while the film is still worth an annual observe, so much more has happened in seasonal cinema since SJP’s iconic spilled-strata scene with matriarch Diane Keaton. That is, queer and lesbian Christmas movies actually center queer people now — same-sex holiday revelers crush and descent in love, break up, regain romance, and just live the same celebratory December
Last week, Queerty posted an article proclaiming, “The Hallmark Channel is gayer than ever this year!” This is followed by a massive list of exactly THREE movies that they consider gay. The first one, Catch Me If You Claus stars Luke Macfarlane in his 16th movie for the network. Yes, the Bros co-star is gay in actual life, but the ethics in the film is not. Kudos to him for continuing to be cast in straight roles, but… do we then count this as a gay film?
The second film on their list, Christmas on Cherry Lane is an ensemble piece that includes a gay couple. Jonathan Bennett, Hallmark’s go-to gay actor for homosexual roles plays opposite Vincent Rodriguez III. It airs December 9th.
The third clip, Friends and Family Christmas centers on lesbian friends (Humberly Gonzalez & Ali Liebert) who must pose as a couple for the holidays… and you’ll never guess what happens! This one premieres on December 17th.
So there you have it. As a reminder: The Hallmark Channel is premiering 42 – FORTY-TWO – new Hallmark Christmas movies this season. And we’re supposed to kvell because TWO of them are gay-ish? Honey, please.

Lifetime’s First Lesbian Christmas Feature Made One Joke That Nearly Destroyed Me
Have you ever gotten a rogue onion ring in your order of fries? If you like onion rings, it’s cause for celebration. But if you absentmindedly bite into it and think it’s going to be a strip of potato, the slimy sweetness might make you gag.
That’s how I felt when, midway through Lifetime’s wholesome new Christmas movie, I encountered a joke about strap-ons.
According to Lifetime, Under the Christmas Tree is its “first lesbian holiday romance,” directed by, I kid you not, a woman named Lisa Rose Snow. (The channel aired its first-ever LGBTQ Christmas movie, The Christmas Setup, lastyear, amid a slew of putatively groundbreaking gay holiday films.) In the true spirit of Christmas rom-coms, Under the Christmas Tree is chaste: Hearts are warmed, but nothing ever gets truly steamy between Alma (Elise Bauman, nearly upstaged by her bangs) and Charlie (Tattiawna Jones), who meet adorable in Camden, Maine, just before Christmas.
